WEA calls on Italy to establish a Religious Freedom Act that better protects religious minorities

The World Evangelical Alliance, along with its national member, the Italian Evangelical Alliance (Alleanza Evangelica Italiana), called on the Italian government to establish a Religious Freedom Act that does not discriminate against religious minorities and to grant State agreements with the religious communities who have made a request and are waiting for approval, at the Human Rights Council.

In its statement, the WEA emphasized that religious communities in Italy are increasingly diverse due to migration and globalization, and thus there is a need for more inclusive religious freedom legislation. Opening new places of worship and keeping existing ones open remains difficult in Italy due to the unfair nature of zoning regulations.

The oral statement was made at the Human Rights Council 59th session, during the adoption of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) outcome of Italy, on 30 June 2025.
