WEA urges States to ensure equitable access to burial space for all faith groups

The World Evangelical Alliance strongly urged States to consult religious communities in shaping burial policies, ensure equitable access to burial space for all faith groups, and protect families from violence and intimidation during funeral rites. The statement recalled WEA’s previous report on raising concerns in India, where several families have reportedly been compelled to transport bodies long distances, leave loved ones unburied for extended periods, or undergo coerced reconversion rituals before burial could proceed.

The oral statement was made at the Human Rights Council 61st session, during the Interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, on 3 March 2025.

In her final remarks, the Special Rapporteur thanked the WEA alongside Christian Solidarity Worldwide for the years of inputs and human rights work.
